Short Term Grant

The Short Term Research Grants serve to promote, encourage and support research activities of the academic staff of the university directed towards the expansion of knowledge, discovery of ideas and creation of new products, services, processes and/or tools. It is hoped that through these activities, the university would realise its mission and vision to become a centre of excellence for research and education. Specific objectives of these grants are as follows:

> To finance research activities in full or in part which will create, promote, enhance and preserve Universiti Sains Malaysia pre-eminence as a leading institute or a centre of excellence in selected fields (foresight programmes).
> To support short term research activities which are deemed important and significant in supporting teaching activities.
> To assist in the development of new and emerging knowledge, processes, techniques, products or tools.
> To enhance co-operation between university staff and industry.
> To promote national human resource development in R&D.

This grant is eligible to those who are from Grade 41 to 54.

 

RU - The Research University Grant Scheme

Universiti Sains Malaysia is recognised as a Research University. Due to this recognition, USM has taken the initiative to introduce the Research University Grant in order to support the Research University agenda. This initiative’s aim is to achieve the KPI (Key Performance Indicators) set by MOHE (Ministry of Higher Education).

It is hoped that this grant will cultivate and sustain young researchers to become matured researchers. The Research University Grant is a competitive grant categorised as below:-

  • Research University Grant for Individual (RUI)
  • Research University Grant for Team (RUT)
  • Research University Grant for Cluster (RUC)

Objectives

  • To enhance research activities in the Institution of Higher Learning
  • To become a knowledge Centre of Excellence through new discoveries
  • To enrich existing discovery as well as contributing towards the development of nation’s scientific community

FRGS - (The Fundamental Research Grant Scheme)

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has come to realise that fundamental research is important. In order to enhance fundamental research, MOE has received funding for RM30 million to be distributed among institutions of higher learning. As a start, USM has been allocated RM3 million for this purpose. The USM Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) is a competitive grant open to all academics interested in carrying out fundamental research.

Fundamental research is research leading to an advancement of knowledge in the areas of human and natural sciences. The research will focus on: accumulation of theories, fundamental structures and fundamental processes with the goal of understanding them.

This grant is open to all full-time academic staff of the university who are employed on a permanent or contractual basis. Part-time staff are not eligible. This grant has a ceiling of up to RM100,000 per request for a period of research not exceeding two years.

 

INCENTIVE GRANT

This grant is open to all full-time academic staff of the university who are employed on a permanent or contractual basis. Part-time staff are not eligible. This grant has a ceiling of up to RM5,000 per request for a period of research not exceeding two years. This grant acts as a starting point for USM researchers to start their research.

Due to budget constraint, priority is given to academic staff. Application can be made direct to Vice Chancelor [Research & Innovation] at any time through the Head of Departments respectively. The use of Incentive Grant is for one year only and can be extended extra 6 months if necessary.
